Make a Career Move to Miller Thomson
You have invested in your career – and we want to invest in you. At Miller Thomson, over 500 lawyers across Canada chose to build a practice with us. Why? Because we give our lawyers the resources to take ownership of their work and grow a practice area that matters to them.
As Canada’s fastest-growing mid-market business law firm, we work with a wide range of local, national, and international clients. That means you have the unique opportunity to build a practice area that influences the Canadian business landscape and beyond by taking the lead on your own files and creating a practice you can be proud of.
We supply you with the resources and environment you need to excel, and then we let you guide the rest. At Miller Thomson, there is no limit to what you can achieve.
Your Legal Education Doesn’t Stop with Law School
The reality is law school does not give you on-the-job training. That is why a well-established and thorough professional development programme is so essential in a lawyer’s career. Our programmes are designed to deliver consistent access to exciting and challenging work, quality mentoring, exceptional training, and regular formal and informal feedback.
Professional Development and Growth
Each associate follows their own unique development path. To support this, we focus on creating learning and growth opportunities that prepare and support you through your career. Our flexible, interactive and engaging programs cover a wide variety of substantive knowledge, business skills, practice management and diversity and inclusion topics. Our learning management system offers an ever-growing library of over 400 hours of CPD accredited content, available to you wherever and whenever you need it. We offer a number of curricula focused on providing fundamental practical knowledge on substantive topics. This includes our most recent project, Miller Thomson’s Associate Advocacy Program (“MTAAP”), which was developed in conjunction with OsgoodePD and provides hands-on case file based training on all aspects of an advocacy matter.
Mentoring
We ensure a team of mentors is available to help lawyers as they progress through their careers. Formal training programs are supplemented by direct involvement in client service. Senior lawyers ensure that associates participate in meetings, negotiations, conference calls, business development and client social events, and the billing process. We want you to understand the business of law in addition to the practice of law.
Reviews
Associate reviews are conducted semi-annually. One review focuses on career development (mid-year), and another focuses on an associate’s annual performance. Together with our formal review process, associates are also encouraged to seek out informal constructive feedback throughout the year.
Learning Opportunities
Whatever stage of your career, we can equip you with the tools to grow professionally and expand your practice.
